I am a contributing Writer for Leisure Painter Magazine and have recently enjoyed writing two articles which will feature in the Summer issue.

‘Conflicts’:- a novel.

A number of years ago, before I embarked on my journey to train as a medical artist, I submitted part of the manuscript of my novel ‘Conflicts’ into a competition run by ‘You’ magazine and ‘The Mail of Sunday’….and reached the final 50! It is now my intention to finish my novel and see if I can find anyone to take an interest in it. ‘Conflicts’ is a love story and a political thriller, based in Kenya, South Africa and Europe.

Having grown up around the world (attending 13 schools) in Nigeria (Lagos & Ibadan), Australia (Adelaide & Sydney) and Nairobi, Kenya before returning to the UK to attend 6th Form at boarding school, I had enjoyed a multicultural upbringing. My work experiences in Kenya and Saudi Arabia continued this theme and it was only when I went to South Africa to work in Johanesburg that I really began to understand what living under the regime of apartheid meant to so many.

‘Conflicts’ was written in response to my experiences of living in South Africa under the regime of apartheid.

Children’s books:

I have a number of children’s books in progress that I am writing and illustrating myself.

Although I enjoy working as a Designer, Illustrator and Medical Artist…..

……when it comes to my work as a Fine Artist I have no choice in the matter, I just have to paint!

I work in all media; pencil, charcoal, watercolour, acrylic and oils and I am content just to create artwork and to spend hours in my studio painting for exhibition….and from time to time, on commission.

I love working as a portrait and figurative artist and also as an animal artist.  I have a particular love of animal art and just adore creating images of horses, dogs and wildlife…and landscapes they are found in!

Character Development:

I love working closely with an author on character development.  Here are some characters I developed which were used on the cover of a children’s book entitled ‘The New School’ by David Tjader.  (I also designed the book jacket.)  This book is now available from Amazon and W.H. Smiths.

The characters here were further developed from the early tonal studies, such as the one below.  Before colour was introduced, these tonal studies were discussed with the author to make sure that these characters were what he wanted, and were more or less what he had been imagining….and luckily they were; he was delighted with them!

The author requested a watercolour look to the work and so the characters were painted before being scanned in and further painted in Adobe Photoshop.  It is great fun creating clothes with creases, shadows and highlights in Photoshop.

An alternative way to work is to create characters digitally, which is challenging but also very enjoyable as I love working with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

As an illustrator, I work in all areas.

I am a Member of the Association of Illustrators and the Fine Art Trade Guild.

Artwork ranges from simple line work to complex highly detailed illustrations and can be produced using a variety of media ranging from simple pen and ink or watercolour to multi-layered digital artwork using the Adobe Creative Suite. I am experienced in photo-manipulation.

Based in the UK, I am a Member of the Medical Artists’ Association (UK) and a Registered Medical Illustration Practitioner. I am also a Member of the Assocation Europeenes des Illustrateurs Medicaux et Scientifiques, a Member of the Association of Medical Illustrators (USA), a Member of the Royal College of Midwives and a Member of the Royal College of Nurses. Having previously worked for over 25 years as a Registered Midwife and also as a Registered Nurse, both in the UK and overseas, I have a great deal of experience in many aspects of health services around the world which is of great help to me in my work as an medical Artist.

Above is an oil painting entitled ‘A Tribute to Lancashire Constabulary Mounted Branch’ , a five foot wide oil on canvas, painted traditionally in layers.

As well as working as a Freelance Illustrator and Medical Artist I enjoy Fine Art; painting on commission and for exhibitions! I have a love of horses and I particularly enjoy creating large pieces of artwork which I hope show their elegance and power.

Figurative Art & Portraiture are a specialty!

Below is a fun illustration created in Adobe Photoshop.

My studies in medical art; learning anatomy and honing my skills in observational drawing have enabled me to progress this area of my work.

Illustrations are produced using many different media ranging from traditional oils to watercolours, pencil or charcoal. Digital illustrations are produced using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Digital illustrations can look quite astounding…and in the case of artwork produced in Adobe Illustrator, are infinitely scalable!

The Galleries at Samlesbury Hall, Lancashire

The exhibition is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

I will be exhibiting artwork in this exhibition and will also be at the AAA Art Rendezvous on Sunday 3rd October from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The AAA Art Rendezvous promises to be a fun and informative day out, with representatives present from the three charities AAA has worked with this year:

• The Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund.
• The Lancashire Retired Police Horse Benevolent Fund.
• The Lancashire Retired Police Dog Benevolent Fund.

There is free entry to Samlesbury Hall Galleries when visiting the Hall, but an entry fee to look around the rest of the Hall.
